We keep meaning to
compile a list of must-have features for a compact, versatile and
realistically priced pocket Geiger Counter.
Hang on, there’s no
need... The Bosean FS-5000 ticks almost all of our boxes and, speaking of
‘ticks’, it has plenty of those.
In our view an event or ‘particle’ ticker/beeper should be a standard feature on any sensible instrument: It’s expected and, apart from anything else, can be handy, and even reassuring, for seeking out - and if necessary - avoiding especially lively radioactive sources, so a big Tick for that one

The FS 5000’s backlit
colour LCD display gets full marks as well. It shows counts per second (CPS)
and per minute (CPM), dose rates in microsieverts (uSv/hr), plus there's an
informative graphical readout, for spotting trends.
It is small, pocket-sized and based around the popular Beta, Gamma, X-Ray sensitive J321 Geiger tube: Tick Tick. There’s user-set threshold alarms with audible and visible indicators: Tick. It has an 1800 mAh Li-ion rechargeable battery with a decent running time: Tick. An easy to use on-screen menu: Tick. the case is sturdy, with a metal detachable belt clip: Tick. And here’s one you don’t see very often on low-cost instruments; a comprehensive data logging facility with the added bonus of a PC interface, via the supplied USB charge/data cable, for viewing and downloading stored data to a free software application called PRDMS. The download link is in the instructions (see notes below): Tick Tick Tick!

Notes for PRDMS free software Firmware & OS tweaks.
The Personal Radiation Dose Management System PC program for Windows (download link in instructions) can be a bit fiddly to install and use, especially on pre Win 7 operating systems, and once it's up and running make sure you click the Language icon in the top right hand corner on the home screen once it is installed, unless you are fluent in Chinese... There are workarounds for most installation issues, firmware upgrades and alternative operating systems floating around the web but non PC savvy tinkerers beware! There be dragons; advanced users only, and messing with the device's software will invalidate your warranty...
We cannot answer questions about the free PRDMS software or modifying the device's firmware etc.
