Being aware of what’s going on in your local environment, where you work and the places you visit, is clearly a good thing. The good news is much of what you need to know your senses can tell you, but what about potential hazards you can’t see, touch, taste or smell?

Radioactivity comes into that category. For most of us, the chances of being exposed to elevated or dangerously high levels are relatively small. Even so, it can be comforting to know what’s normal, what’s not, and be warned if or when there’s too much of it.

This neat little gadget, called a Y-M06, can do that. It’s a personal pen-type dosimeter, small enough to slip into a shirt, trouser or jacket pocket, purse or handbag and carry with you, wherever you go. It keeps a constant running check on your exposure to Beta, Gamma and X-Ray radiation. Readings are shown on a colourful LCD display and if levels rise above user-adjustable settings, there are audible, visible and vibra-alert warnings to make you sit up and take notice. It’s powered by a built-in rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery that keeps it running for up to 24 hours. It’s easily recharged in around an hour using the supplied USB cable that connects to a standard Type C socket on the base.

The Y-M06 is housed in a tough, red anodised aluminium case so it can take the rough and tumble of daily life. It comes in a fitted presentation box with a wrist lanyard and instructions, though with only four buttons it is really easy to use. The main display shows operating mode, alarm functions, battery level and Average, Maximum, and Accumulated Dose rates. These are in international standard measurement units of microsieverts per hour (μSv/hr) and microsieverts (μSv) showing real-time and stored values (whilst in operation). For good measure it also has a moving Trend Graph option. Don’t worry; there is a helpful table in the instruction leaflet that lists typical dose values for both the general public and those working in the radiation industry.

The four control buttons are for turning the Y-M06 on and off, changing display mode, setting alarm thresholds, enabling audible and vibration alarms, and pausing and holding current readings. That’s really all you need to know about this very smart looking instrument but as usual, for them as wants it, there is a run-down of the key tech specs below.
