The tiny QuartaRad Radex One is one of the most sensitive and versatile compact Geiger Counters in captivity. It’s based around the highly-rated SBM-20 Geiger Müller tube,  sensitive to Beta, Gamma and X-Ray radiation. Readings are displayed on the top-mounted LCD. There are only two controls, the On/Off /Function button cycles though Search Mode – counts per minute (CPM); Spot Dose rate (μSv/Hr) and Accumulated Dose rate (μSv); the second button is for selecting menu options.
By any reckoning that would be a pretty impressive set of features for something this small but there’s more really useful stuff to come. This includes a user-settable audible threshold alarm, alarm buzzer and a micro USB port. This is for connecting the Radex One to a Windows PC. Free software, downloadable from the QuartaRad, website, continually displays measurements as a moving graph and numbers, so it can be used as a sensor or a monitor. The program can also be used to download and log data, change settings and update the device’s firmware. It’s not going to let you down either, a single AAA cell can keep it running for up to 500 hours. Supplied accessories include a detachable belt clip, neck lanyard, USB cable and an English language instruction manual (incidentally the display is also in English; beware cheap-sounding Russian only versions). The all up weight – including an AAA cell is only 40 grams. Not too shabby for something that slips easily into a shirt or trouser pocker (it measures 112 x 32 x 23mm)!
