We have acquired a very small quantity of NOS (new old stock) gas and oil lantern mantles, made by Aladdin Industries Ltd. The date of manufacture is uncertain but they were almost certainly more than 30 or 40 years old.
These items are woven from fabric (usually cotton or a similar material) that has been soaked in a solution containing the radioactive isotope Thorium. This was used to increase the mantle’s light output. The radioactive material they contain can be a useful, and legal to own check source for testing Geiger Counters. Thorium is no longer used in mantles manufactured in the UK, though it continues to be used in a number of other countries around the world.
We currently have the Aladdin Industries Lox-on Model 12 - see photos for an indication of their size. The mantles are in generally good condition though some of the boxes may show signs of light damp staining.

Once a mantle has been installed in its holder, and the lamp lit, the woven fabric ‘scaffold’ burns off, leaving a fragile skeleton that turns easily to dust. These mantles have not been used, so they are reasonably stable, nevertheless they are still quite delicate and should not be touched or removed from their protective packaging as they can potentially shed dust. The mantles, in their original cardboard cartons will be sealed in plastic bags, and we recommend that they remain this way, and stored away from food preparation areas and well out of the reach of children, preferably in a closed metal container.
