The Polish-made DP-66 was one of the Warsaw Pact's most successful Geiger Counters of the Cold War era; in effect it was the Eastern Bloc's equivalent of the US CDV-700, but with a lot more useful features.

DP-66s are becoming increasingly rare, and some of the ones you might come across are often in a poor state, badly maintained and are often completely non-functional. Rarer still are ones like this. It is in excellent condition, full working order and, what makes it really special, is that it comes complete with its original leather carry case and straps, a tough as old boots wooden storage box and a full compliment of the original accessories - more on those in a moment.

But first the basics. Inside the hand-held probe there are three Geiger tubes, sensitive to a wide range of Beta, Gamma and X-Ray radiation. Measurements are shown in counts per minute (0 - 10,000 cpm) Roentgens/milli Roentgens per hour (0.5mR/h - 200R/h in 6 ranges). The probe is fitted with a rotating Beta Shield and it is powered by a pair of standard D cells, which keeps it running for 60 hours or more.

Although the control labelling and original manual and logbook (both supplied) are in Polish* it is incredibly easy to use. For the record the rotary switch has 8 positions for Power Off (W) Battery Check (K) plus the 6 operating ranges. The only other controls are two buttons for the luminous meter's backlight and zeroing the meter, plus a small knob for zeroing the quartz fibre pen dosimeter (also supplied) when it is inserted into the top panel socket. There is a two-pin socket on the side of the instrument. This is for the earphone (supplied) so you can hear the 'clicks'. If you want something a little louder check out our Geiger Counter Accessories page for an exclusive plug in 'sounder' with an LED Flasher and standard 3.5mm jack adaptor so you can use it with headphones, or connect it to a PC etc.

DP-66s are now over 40 years old and this one almost certainly spent most of that time in storage. There are some signs of light use but it's nothing serious and such wear and tear as there is, is mostly confined to the storage box, which has clearly done a brilliant job of protecting it. The leather case is also in great condition and has a few discoloured patches but again it has kept the actual instrument looking almost like new.

Inside the box you will find the aforementioned manual and  logbook, the original earphone, a DKP-50 fibre pen dosimeter, and a telescopic probe holder, handy for keeping 'lively' sources at arm's length, or for checking ground contamination. For the sake of authenticity we have also included the original mains power supply unit**. We strongly recommend that you do not attempt to use it! We haven't tested it but we are pretty sure that - even if it works - it doesn't meet modern safety standards.
