NEW CDV-700 Speaker (CDS001) £10.00 inc. UK p&p

This fully self-contained speaker module is designed to work with the CDV-700 series Civil Defence Geiger Counters and it produces a good 'tick' from the unit's twin piezo sounders (It's not going to burst your eardrums but it is loud enough to be heard by the user in a moderately noisy environment). Its retractable plug connects via an adaptor lead to a 3.5mm jack socket, which can be fitted upon request to all Grade 1 and II CDV-700s sold by us. Alternatively we can supply a special adaptor (see below). This allows the speaker to connect directly the standard CDV-700 headphone connector (you can also use it with your favourite headphones). There are two types of adaptor (Type A & B). These cost an extra £6.00 when purchased together with the speaker (check CDV700 make and adaptor type from order button drop-down menu).

The speaker has been styled to blend in with the CDV 700 and bears the distinctive Civil Defense logo. It is powered directly by the CDV-700’s audio output so there is no need for any batteries. No fitting is required either as the module is held in place by a pair of magnetic strips. For models with alloy cases we supply an extra pair of self-adhesive magnetic strips. The module measures approximately 94 x 48 x 20mm, it weighs just 320g and comes supplied with a 190mm 3.5mm jack plug to 3.5mm socket adaptor lead.

NEW! CDV-700 Headphone Adaptor, (CDS002) £7.99 inc. UK p&p

Attention CDV-700 fans! As you know these instruments are fitted with an obsolete screw-fit connector that makes it impossible to use ordinary headphones, but not any longer!  The boffins at anythingradioactive have been beavering away and come up with a solution, a CDV-700 to 3.5mm jack adaptor module. There are two types and they screw onto the standard headphone connector and all you have to do is plug your favourite headphones into the jack socket. On the Type A adaptor (left) this is on the end of a short flying lead (approx 70mm or 2.75 inches); on Type B adaptors (right) it’s built into the top. It's as simple as that.

Due to minor differences in the design of the CDV-700 headphone socket over the years it is helpful to know which make of CDV700 you have (Anton, ENI, Lionel or Victoreen) - just indicate your preference on the appropriate drop-down menu box below.

Original CDV-700 Headphone, £16.99 inc. UK p&p

We have a small quantity of these original high impedance magnetic headphones in stock, complete with the now obsolete screw-fit connector. These are no longer made and date from the 1960s and 70s and have never been issued. They are in as-new condition, though there may be one or two light marks resulting from long-term storage, but they are in full working order and ready to use. They may also be of interest to experimenters and work especially well with crystal radios

NEW CDV-715 Survey Meter, £45.00 inc UK p&p

SOLD OUT

We have managed to secure a very small quantity of Victoreen CDV-715 Survey Meters, made in the 1960s. These were produced during the Cold War for the US Civil Defense Corps, but were never issued - they have remained in storage until recently. Considering their age, they are in good condition and come with a copy of  the instruction manual.

These units are believed to be in  working order, but we have to say straight away that if you ever see the meter on one of these instruments move you have probably just survived a nuclear explosion!

The 715 was designed for a post attack situation and only responds to dangerously high levels of radioactivity (scales read from 0.5 – 500 Roentgens/hr) to let survivors know it was (relatively) safe to emerge from their fallout shelters. In other words they are not capable of detecting natural or even slightly elevated levels of radiation so they are being sold for their novelty value only.

These instruments use an Ion Chamber detector module and are powered by a single ‘D’ cell. It has two controls, a rotary switch for circuit/battery test, meter zero and range selection, and a rotary control for meter zero adjustment. The all-metal case is water-resistant and the standard of construction, and materials used, are of the highest standard – as befits a product built on a cost no object government contract. It might not do much, but it’s a real conversation piece and, who knows, one day it may come in useful…

CDV-700 Spares & Parts

You asked for it, and in response to a growing number of requests we’ve put together a selection of bits and pieces for Geiger Counter enthusiasts, hobbyists, DIYers and experimenters.

We carry an extensive range of spares for the classic CDV-700s, made by ENI, Lionel and Victoreen in the 1960s and 70s. We either have in stock, or can get hold of, most parts from case components, meters and GM tubes to hard to find germanium transistors, specialised HV transformers and rectifiers. Battery clips are always in short supply but it’s worth asking. Most parts are recovered from unserviceable units but they are in good order and fully tested prior to despatch. There are far too many components to list here so if there’s something you need just send us an email and we’ll get back to you with a quote lickety-split, including p&p (and we can deliver worldwide).

Geiger Muller Tubes

If you want to design or build your own Geiger Counter (we may be able to offer you some advice on how to make one) we have a good selection of Beta and Gamma sensitive Geiger Muller tubes, manufactured in the USA, Russia and China.  Some of them are brand new (N), others are New Old Stock (NOS) which mean they may have been made some time ago.

However, they are in as-new condition, in good working order and fully tested. Apologies for the somewhat rudimentary specification table; it’s a work in progress and we’ll be adding to it as we go.

Please note we only have 1 OCD-D-101 tube in stock

For those who need more details, you might find what you are looking for on the original spec and data sheets, which you can see by clicking the More Info links that can be found in the table at the foot of the page.

About the CDV-700

The CDV-700 is a true Geiger Counter, displaying an accurate count (when properly calibrated) of beta and gamma jsources. This particular model was manufactured for the Civil Defense Corps by serveral companies in the US, including ENI, Victoreen and Lionel Electronic Laboratories (who also made toy trains). They were produced in fairly large numbers throughout the 1960s and 70s in preperation for expected nuclear conflict.

These devices are based around a 6993 Geiger Muller tube, driven by a simple high voltage circuit producing around 1000 volts. The output from the tube is processed by a transistorised pulse shaping network and integrating circuit, to operate the moving coil meter; a simple audio amplifier drives the supplied headphone.  Many different types of geiger counter were produced during this period but the CDV-700 6b is one of the most popular due to its high sensitivity, rugged construction and legendary reliability.
