It’s another rare opportunity to get your hands on a piece of Cold War history, this time from the other side of the Iron Curtain. The DP-66 & 66M were one of the Warsaw Pact’s equivalents of the CDV-700, but with a lot more features.

First the basics. Inside the hand-held probes there are three Geiger tubes, sensitive to a very wide range of Beta, Gamma and X-Ray radiation. Measurements are shown in counts per minute (0 – 10,000 cpm) Roentgens/milli
Roentgens per hour (0.5 mR/h – 200R/hr) in 6 selectable ranges. The probes are fitted with either a 2 (66M) or 3-mode rotating shield -- see photos**. This is for discriminating between Beta or Gamma,  or high/low range Beta and Gamma. The probes can also be used with a supplied telescopic extension pole, for detecting ground-level sources, in hard to get at places, or for keeping potential sources at arm’s length...

Also included with the outfit is a DKP-50 quartz fibre pen dosimeter, for use use with the DP-66’s built-in charger and zero adjustment.

The large moving coil meter has a luminous dial, it’s backlit too, handy for a spot of night time detection. A magnetic earpiece is provided so you can listen to the clicks. We've also developed a 3.5mm jack adaptor, so it can be connected to ordinary headphones, a custom version of our mini speaker and LED flasher module, or ordinary stereo headphones. More details HERE & last photo, and you can add a Sounder/Flasher module to your DP-66 order, at a discounted price, using the Select Option drop-down menu above the Add To Cart button.

The DP-66/M is a Polish made upgrade of the classic Russian DP-5V, but it uses more up to date (and reliable) components and unlike that old Soviet jobby, it is powered by two readily obtainable 1.5 volt ‘D’ cells torch batteries that can keep it running for 60 hours or more.

Although the control labelling and original manual and logbook are in Polish it’s is incredibly easy to use (but we can also supply an English translation of the manual and we have an optional English language overlay for the main control selector switch on request -- see photo). For the record the rotary switch has 8 positions, for power off (‘W’), battery check (‘K’); the other 6 positions select the operating range. The only other controls are two buttons -- for turning on the meter backlight and zeroing the meter – and a small knob for zeroing the pen dosimeter when it is inserted into the charging socket on the top panel.

Bear in mind that our small stockpile of DP-66 & 66Ms (the 3-tube probe assemblies are identical) are now well over 40 years old. Most of that time was spent in long-term storage, but inevitably they show some signs of use. There’s nothing serious but expect a few scuffs and marks here and there. Obviously they are in full working order and the overall condition is generally very good. Before shipping they are thoroughly checked, cleaned and where necessary refurbished. The original leather carry cases and wooden storage box – also included -- have seen some action but they are in pretty good, usable, condition and still capable of protecting the instrument, probe and accessories. The outfit includes the original instruction and maintenance manual and maintenance log book. Both are in Polish but there is a good translation of the instructions, in PDF format, which you can view by clicking HERE

* The mains adaptor is a fairly crude, old-fashioned design. It is included in the outfit
for the sake of completeness but we strongly recommend that it is not used on the grounds of electrical safety.

** The DP-66 and 66M are practically identical, apart from the design of the probe's Beta shield. The only minor operational difference is that when extended, for Beta detection, the length of the probe housing is extended by 2.5cm

Important note: whilst the DP-66/M is sensitive enough to detect normal background and elevated levels of radioactivity, is not being sold as a serious scientific instrument nor is it intended for use in safety critical or health related applications.
